Sophie Fretwell knew she wanted to pursue a career in Media.

“I’ve always been creative! I have a keen interest in discovering different ways of telling stories and the collaborations involved in creating media really appealed to me.”

She discovered the AUB’s Costume & Performance Design course and its impressive reputation and fantastic exemplars convinced Sophie to study at Arts University Bournemouth. During her degree, she became very interested in the different applications of Costume Design and wanted to explore the world of costume design and illustration for animation. The courses allowed her to gain knowledge in different aspects of Costume Illustration and learn to adapt and deliver projects for different media.

“The staff of the Costume Degree were all invaluable.”

“The MA in Animation Production gave me the opportunity to access facilities, equipment and programmes I wouldn’t have otherwise been able to, to direct and make my own stop-motion short.”

While studying at AUB, Sophie developed her communication and collaboration skills, while understanding the importance of the connections she made at university. “You are already networking with the entire university when you collaborate on projects.” According to her, the Alumni forward work to each other, which made her gain a few jobs this way.

Sophie now works as a costume illustrator for film, TV and theatre and is able to adapt her style for each individual project. In the summer between her degree and the masters, she got her first job as a Costume Illustrator for BBC’s Good Omens. “Since then I’ve worked on No. 9 Film’s The Limehouse Golem, Netflix’s Winx Club, The Birmingham Rep Theatre’s The Wizard of Oz, BBC America’s The Watch and various Ad campaigns such as TK Maxx’s 2019 Winter campaign.”
